17 arrested with 204 bags of Indian hemp

Sacks of Indian hemp
Seized Wee1Seventeen persons have been arrested in a dawn swoop at Apesika, a suburb of Ankama Electoral Area of the Kwahu East District in the Eastern region.

The Nkawkaw Divisional Police Command also seized 204 bags of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in the operation. Eleven out of the 17 suspects including five females and six males are expected to appear before court today, Monday February 15, 2016 after screening.

The Nkawkaw Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah told Starr News the police gathered intelligence about the activities of farmers in the area, hence embarked on a dawn operation to arrest the situation.

“This is our first time of embarking on such operational exercise in that area but once we have that much I can confidently say this is the work they do, the village comprises 21 houses and we almost retrieved the suspected substances from every house.”

He said the suspects tried bribing the police after they were busted but the officers refused their offer. According to him, two trips of Kia Truck was used to convey the substances to the police station.

The police chief said the substance will be sent to the Police Laboratory for a forensic test to aid prosecution.

Chief Supt Peprah stated the exercise is part of security measures being undertaken by the Division to reduce criminal activities ahead of the Easter celebrations in the area.

Is this the Penalty of the Century? Messi-Suarez’s unique goal could start a trend in world football

Barcelona: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez combined to score one of the classiest penalties in recent times as Messi passed the ball into Suarez’s path for the Uruguayan to complete his hat-trick in a 6-1 rout of Celta Vigo on Sunday.
Barca were already leading 3-1 when Messi — who has missed 17 of 83 penalties in his career — was mowed down inside the area after an outrageous piece of skill.
However, instead of handing the spot-kick to Suarez, Messi went one better by rolling the ball into the path of the onrushing Uruguyan striker to slot home.
The goal brought back memories of another Barca legend Johan Cruyff when he and Jesper Olsen played a one-two for the Dutchman to score when playing for Ajax against Helmond Sport in 1982.

French duo Thierry Henry and Robert Pires tried a similar trick without success as they botched a penalty for Arsenal against Manchester City in 2005.
Spanish sports daily AS quickly christened the move as the “penalty of the century.”
And Barca defender Jordi Alba admitted the South American duo had caught even their teammates by surprise.
“Leo always invents things and it was perfect,” said the Spanish international.
“We hadn’t seen it in any training session, we didn’t know anything.”
Yet, some sections of the Spanish media also claimed Barca’s creativity boarded on a lack of respect for their opponents.
“We all remember Cruyff’s goal,” said Barca boss Luis Enrique.
“I wouldn’t dare to do it because I would tread on the ball.
“Some will like it, some won’t, but as Barca players and members of the club, on top of winning titles we try to enjoy our football in a spectacular way.”
Thanks to the win, Barcelona maintained their grip on the Spanish title.
Atletico Madrid remain three points behind as they were 1-0 winners at Getafe with Fernando Torres scoring a first-minute goal.
Real Madrid slipped down to third, a further point adrift of Barca, who also have a game in hand on both clubs from the capital.
Atletico then held on to record their 15th clean sheet in 24 Liga games this season to leapfrog Real Madrid back into second place.
However, Diego Simeone’s men did suffer a big injury blow when Carrasco hobbled off with ankle ligament damage early in the second period.
The Belgian international is now a major doubt for both Atletico’s trips to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last-16 next week and the Madrid derby in a fortnight.
Elsewhere, Sevilla closed the gap on Villarreal in the battle for the fourth Champions League place to eight points with a 2-0 win over relegation threatened Las Palmas.

Fernando Forestieri celebrates Sheffield Wednesday s opening goal in their 4-0 romp against Brentford (Picture: Steve Ellis).

Fernando Forestieri believes Sheffield Wednesday have taken a page out of the Barcelona playbook in their pursuit of Premier League football.

Owls’ head coach Carlos Carvalhal is not afraid to think big and he urges his players to study how the world’s elite play.
What is good enough for Barca superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar, it seems – where they combine hard toil with talent – is good enough for the Owls, a message their ever-improving team have taken to heart.
The Owls have yet to be beaten in 2016 and sit fifth in the Championship – just four points off automatic promotion.
They thumped four goals past 10-man Brentford on Saturday – their biggest win of the season – Kieran Lee’s goal the culmination of patient build-up and possession.
But it is the work Wednesday do off the ball, leading from the front with Argentinian Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Atdhe Nuhiu, in hustling the opposition, and closing down spaces, which is the cornerstone of their success.
Throw in a midfield that includes the scampering talents of Barry Bannan and Kieran Lee, and Wednesday’s graft without possession is impressive.
“For the third goal it was pass, pass, pass, like Barcelona,” said Forestieri. “No, Carlos says go to the pitch and play, but we train every single day.
“If someone lost the ball, me, Hooper, Nuhiu or someone is quick to get the ball back. We do this in training.
“I have never seen a coach in the Championship who has such big ideas, a big mentality, because he thinks about Barcelona, Manchester City, big clubs.
“Look at Barcelona, they lose the ball, it doesn’t matter if it’s Messi, Neymar, everyone presses.
“We follow this idea, and now I think we are doing well, we need to carry on.”
Wednesday are far from being the finished article, and clearly not in Barcelona’s league, as slack defending in the first two minutes against Brentford nearly saw them concede twice.
Nico Yennaris rushed his shot when he had time for an extra touch to allow Keiren Westwood an easy save and the Owls’ goalkeeper then denied Alan Judge with a fine block.
But the pivotal moment in the game came in the fifth minute, Bees defender Yoann Barbet shown a straight red card for bringing down Hooper, after the striker had got goal-side of him.
Seven minutes later and Wednesday were in front, Daniel Pudil’s deflected cross headed in by Forestieri for his 12th goal of the season.
Hooper added a second when he sneaked in again to half-volley home Westwood’s booming kick downfield.
It was 3-0 just before half-time, some slick passing finally resulting in Bannan picking out Hooper in the area, and he headed down for Lee. The midfielder kept calm to swivel and stroke the ball into the net.
The second half was an anti-climax as 10-man Brentford carried out a damage limitation job, but substitute Lucas Joao capped off the afternoon, drilling home in the 89th minute.
From being the lowest scorers at home in the Championship last season – 16 goals in 23 games at Hillsborough – Carvalhal has revolutionised this team.
Today they are the highest scorers in the division, with 49 goals, and have a strike force that has already plundered over 30 goals between them. Forestieri (12), Hooper (10), Joao (7) and Nuhiu (4) mean Carvalhal has an array of strike talent at his disposal.
Against Brentford, Forestieri was deployed wide to allow Nuhiu and Hooper to play central, a ploy the Owls like using at Hillsborough.
The 26-year-old former Watford striker – enjoying the best goals return of his career, after netting just five times last term – is thriving in S6.
“When Nuhiu and Hooper play, for me it’s brilliant because we attack right, left and the defender doesn’t understand what’s happening,” said Forestieri.
“It’s perfect for us. We need to carry on like this.
“I have played with a lot of strikers, but Hooper is brilliant. Not only scoring, but working hard for the team.
“Also Nuhiu and Lucas (Joao), who came on and scored, helped the team.
“Now Carlos for the next game he has trouble, because he doesn’t know who to put in the starting XI. That’s good.”
The Owls are five points clear of seventh-placed Birmingham, but Carvalhal played down their promotion chances. He dismissed rival managers’ claims this season that Wednesday’s sudden rise up the table is due to spending big money in the transfer market.
Their biggest outlay, £3m each for Hooper and Forestieri, is still some way short of the Owls’ record £4.5m buy for Italian Paolo Di Canio in 1997.
Carvalhal said: “We are outsiders in this competition.
“There are teams more ready than us. Some coaches are talking that we are spending a lot of money; that is not correct.
“We have a budget in the middle of the Championship, in my opinion.”
Sheffield Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Lees, Sasso, Pudil, Wallace (McGugan 74), Bannan, Lee, Forestieri, Nuhiu (McGeady 62), Hooper (Joao 80). Unused substitutes: Price, Semedo, Turner, Bennett.
Brentford: Button, Colin, Dean, Barbet, Bidwell, Kerschbaumer (O’Connell 8), Woods, Canos (Saunders 45), Judge, Yennaris (McEachran 82), Hofmann. Unused substitutes: Bonham, Macleod, Swift, Vibe.

Neymar claims Lionel Messi's penalty pass was meant for him

Neymar Barcelona
Was the pass intended for Neymar?
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi made the headlines once again but this time, it wasn’t for his scoring heroics but for assisting Suarez from the penalty spot! The incindent went viral on social media as Messi laid the ball on for an on-rushing Suarez when everyone including the Celta Vigo goalkeeper was expecting him to shoot.
But now Neymar has come out and said that the pass was intended for him and not the Uruguayan. “It was for me, we had practiced it in training!. Leo and myself had practiced but Luis was closer and he scored it.”, the Brazilian grinningly stated.
Barcelona were leading 3-1 before Messi won a penalty, and as always he stepped to take it. When he did lay it off video replays show both Suarez and Neymar attacking it but Suarez got there first and completed his hat-trick.

Nevertheless, Neymar seemed to be happy for his teammate and didn’t think it was selfish saying, “Our friendship is the most important thing. It doesn't matter who scores the goals just that we win the games”.
His Barcelona teammates though seemed perplexed and had no idea that they were planning that move. Iniesta said he wasn’t sure when had they decided to do it saying, “I had never seen them do it but I had heard them discuss it, Perhaps it was for Neymar but Luis was there so he converted it.”.
Left back, Jordi Alba was also bemused and claimed he hadn’t seen them do it training. “I didn't know because it's not usual to pass, but he is always coming up with things," he said. “It went well. The penalty was perfect. I don't know if they talked about it, but they're always trying things.”, he added.
The goal has sparked international debate, firstly on whether it should have been allowed and secondly if it was an act of unselfishness or arrogance from the little magician. Messi was all set to score his 300th La Liga goal after scoring his 299th earlier in the game with a sublime free-kick but instead chose to settle for the assist.
The Catalan club restored their three-point cushion at the top of the league after the 6-1 win over Celta Vigo. The holders also have a game in hand over the chasing pack having played 23 games.
The Madrid clubs had earlier kept up the pace behind the leaders, both of them winning their respective matches to ensure Barcelona didn't extend their lead even further.

FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique hailed his side’s “spectacular” performance on the night after they blasted six goals past Celta Vigo to reclaim top spot in the league table.

Lionel Messi put on a scintillating show at the Camp Nou to exact revenge against a Celta side that had inflicted a damaging 4-1 defeat upon the Catalans earlier in the season. He curled in a delicious free kick to open the scoring for Barcelona in the 28th minute.
Uruguayan sensation Luis Suarez scored a second half hattrick to take his season’s tally to 39 goals in all competitions – the most by any player in Europe. Ivan Rakitic and Neymar completed the rout by scoring late on inflict a crushing defeat upon the Galician out
Speaking to the media after the match, Barcelona manager Luis Enrique heaped enormous praise upon his players after their breathtaking display against Celta Vigo on Sunday.
“I see these players be even better in training and some things make you stand still,” said Enrique (as reported by football espana). “Playing Celta isn’t an easy match. We lacked finesse in the first half in the final metres.
“It might seem like an easy game but we’re strengthened by this. Historic? I think it’s beautiful. Historic will be when we win trophies.”
Asked about Messi’s outrageous penalty which invoked the memories of Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff, Enrique replied, “The penalty is legal. We all know the famous one, Johan Cruyff. We try to win trophies and in addition have fun. Disrespect? Who talk about that? We have to respect our team. This country accepts a kick more than a piece of skill.
“We know why this happens. It will keep happening and we know where it comes from.”

Moyes convinced LVG days numbered at Man Utd

David Moyes can't see Louis van Gaal surviving if Manchester United fail to finish in the top four.
Van Gaal succeeded Moyes as United manager 18 months ago.
Moyes told Sky Sports' Goals on Sunday show: "I knew Manchester United need to qualify for the Champions League. I think Manchester United need to be there.
"They are a club of status and want to be at that level, if not more. They want to be winning it if they can, never mind qualifying for it. That's what happens at Manchester United. It's that level."
Given his own experiences at United, Moyes has sympathy for Van Gaal in his current predicament.
He said: "There's so much media attention on Louis van Gaal just now. When I lost my job, he was lauded by everybody in football - by you people, the media and everybody else. Now many of you are the ones saying he should lose his job.
"If you go to Manchester United, that's what you get. You get an awful lot of media attention. But I still believe I was the right person to take the job."

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has lamented Manchester United's sponsorship focus.
Aldridge wrote in the Sunday World: "In my playing days and as a manager, Facebook and Twitter had not been invented and yet now we see football clubs basing so much of their business models on their social media reach.
"So when you see Wayne Rooney or Juan Mata telling you to go and watch a new movie in the next few months, there is every chance they are doing it as part of Man Utd's sponsorship deal with the film makers. How bizarre.
"I look at the list of sponsors Man Utd and Liverpool have on their books these days and it is mind-boggling.
"I'm told that Utd's deal with 20th Century Fox takes their total list of sponsors to a staggering total of SEVENTY and when you have that kind of revenue stream flowing into a company, it's easy to see why supporters are not top of their agenda.
"Roy Keane saw this coming many years ago when he highlighted how the 'prawn sandwich brigade' were taking over Old Trafford on matchdays and he was ahead of his time in that comment."

EC vows to prosecute vote buyers

Vote BuyingFile photo
The Electoral Commission has promised to put before court person engaged in vote buying during the November elections when credible evidence is made available.

The EC’s decision comes on the heels of proposals by civil society group, Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) for the Ghana Police to prosecute all persons engaged in vote buying ahead of and during the this year’s general elections.

The Commission’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Sylvia Annor, told Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah her outfit will go hard on such offenders.

“We can only facilitate the prosecution of people that we have seen visibly or physically when we have the evidence that Mr A is giving money to Mr B for [to buy votes] then we can proceed,” she said.

She underscored the need for the public to be vigilant and prompt the EC when they see people offering money for votes.

“The Electoral Commission may not be at certain places at certain times so that if you are a good citizen of this country and you see something happening, you have a right and the responsibility to cause the arrest of that person,” she said.

IDEG Executive Director, Dr Emmanuel Akwetey, first made the call for the arrest and prosecution of politicians who bribe voters during an interaction with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command early this month.

Dr Akwetey noted that vote buying was against the tenets of democracy and contrary to the laws of Ghana, and called on the police to crack the whip. Vote buying is an open secret during elections in the country.

Politicians always accuse each other of bribing electorates with money, food and other items.

Dr Akwetey cited the UK as an example of countries where politicians have been jailed for buying votes and suggested that same should be done in Ghana.

Ivor Greenstreet begins ‘Thank You’ tour

Gen Sec Ivor Kobina Greenstreet CPPIvor Greenstreet - cpp Presidential candidate
The Convention Peoples Party’s (CPP) Presidential candidate for the November general elections, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, has commenced a nationwide “Thank you” tour, to show gratitude to the party’s delegates who elected him at the Congress.

Ivor Greenstreet in appreciation of the overwhelming support from delegates of the three regions of the north began the tour in the Northern Region. As his first outreach programme, he is using the tour to solicit sufficient votes for the party.

At a meeting with some constituency executives in Tamale, he thanked the northern delegates for the confidence reposed in him and promised to lead the party to the promised land.

According to him, the CPP needed a united front to win the 2016 general elections. Ivor Greenstreet also met with the disability community in the northern region.

His entourage fraternized with the Muslim community and urged the clerics to pray for the CPP’s electoral victory.

He finally addressed a mammoth rally in the Kumbungu constituency which the CPP won through a by-election in 2013.

The CPP National Chairman, Professor Edmond Dele, warned that the party leadership would not entertain traitors.

“The problem of the CPP comes from within and so we must brace ourselves together and don’t let any traitors come and destroy that unity that we are trying to build.”

He encouraged all CPP loyalists to remain steadfast and desist from flirting with other political parties for selfish gains.

Professor Dele emphasized that the CPP should remain focused to be able to win the 2016 general elections.

“We must unite behind our flagbearer who was elected with an overwhelming majority. The voice of the people has spoken, and that is the voice of God.”

He said the party would be rebranded to make it attractive to the youth and women.

He thus tasked party leaders in the region to retain the Kumbungu seat and win additional seats in the area.

The Northern Region was the CPP’s stronghold during the first Republic under Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah’s watch.

The dynamics changed when Jerry John Rawlings formed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992.

The NDC has since enjoyed electoral monopoly of the region in subsequent general elections.

Tafo unrest: 'Officials had prior intelligence'

Captain (rtd) Ebenezer Budu Koomson
Captain Budu Koomson 2 A former military officer Captain Ebenezer Budu Koomson (rtd) has said that security officials had prior intelligence about the Tafo clashes before the skirmishes broke out.

Mr Koomson condemned the failure of security officials in the Ashanti Region to avert the violent clashes, which resulted in one death.

“What I have a problem with is that we are getting information that the security agencies actually got wind of the brewing tensions or the possibility of an explosive activity as far back as the previous weekend,” he revealed on Citi FM’s ‘The Big Issue’ programme on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

Apart from one person dying, several people got injured on Wednesday February 10 when Muslim youth clashes with locals in the area. The conflict started after some young men, on the orders of the Tafo chief, pulled down a fence erected by the Muslims to hedge the cemetery from encroachment.

Several cars were vandalised, while a bank, a mosque, and six churches were set ablaze amidst riots and gunfire. Military and police officers had to be deployed to the area to maintain peace. A dusk-to-dawn curfew was also imposed to forestall reprisal attacks and an escalation of the violence with forty people arrested.

Capt Budu Koomson told host Umaru Sanda Amadu that security officials in the country must be proactive to deal with issues before any damages occur when they get prior information about any incident.

“They had the signals and that is why I said that they should be preemptive and proactive. There are people who are instigators or kingpins in this thing and if the security agencies picked the signals what did they do? We like reacting too much,” he lamented.

“Our energies and capacities are so often directed to reaction and that bothers me because I know the capacities of the system [to deal with the problem]. I don’t know whether they don’t have the political or social space to work,” he noted.

According to him, security officials could have moved swiftly to apprehend the brains behind the case, if the proper structures had been put in place.

“If the systems had been there, I daresay that they might even have known the ring leaders and instigators of these things. If you are really serious you can immobilise them, so, that this thing won’t happen,” he added.

Meanwhile the Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharabutu, has visited the place to help bring peace.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has also pleaded with the police to screen and release the forty people who were picked up in a swoop as discussions are held to bring calm to the area.

Ghana receives supports from Iran to fight terrorism

President Mahama with Hassan Rouhani
Mahama In Iran1President John Dramani Mahama and his Iranian Counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, have agreed to closely collaborate in the fight against extremism and terrorism.

The two reached the agreement after holding discussions on the matter behind closed doors.

President Mahama, who is on a two day state visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran said the collaboration was necessary in the wake of the far reaching effects of extremism on the world.

Addressing a press conference after the closed door meeting, President Maham explained said “violent extremism and terrorism is a threat to the whole world and we can only defeat it if we collaborate with each other.”

“In Africa we are also affected by violent extremism, the situation in Libya is affecting the Sahelian areas of Africa; the operations of Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, the operation of Boko Haram are all threats to our peaceful survival.”

He told the press that they “discussed the issue on two levels, on the levels of using cultural means to try and fight against extremist ideology, but at the same time sharing intelligence and working together to fight terrorism.”

He also commended Hassan Rouhani for measures they’ve put in place in the fight against terrorism.

Meanwhile, Ghana and Iran have entered into two agreements in the areas of oil and gas and petrochemical engineering.

President John Dramani Mahama during the joint press conference said the agreements are in areas where Iran holds a comparative advantage and would further strengthen the Ghana-Iran relationship.

Blood shortage cause of death of many accident victims in U/E

Mtn BloodMTN Foundation organised a blood donation campaign
Majority of accident victims in the Upper East Region die because of unavailability of blood at hospitals and other health facilities in the region.

Though figures are not readily available, Head of Blood Mobilization at the Bolgatanga Hospital, Hajaratu Issah, says health personnel, under such circumstances, are often unable to assist such patients who lose so much blood before they arrive at the hospitals for attention.

She is encouraging residents to voluntarily donate blood to address the persistent unavailability of the life-saving commodity, in some instances at acute levels across the region.

Madam Issah was speaking at a blood donation exercise organized by non-governmental organization, Save a Life Foundation-Ghana, in collaboration with the Bolgatanga Hospital, supported by MTN Foundation.

Nearly 230 units of blood were collected in Saturday’s exercise, as part of Valentine’s Day celebrations, aimed at showing love to people who may be in need of blood in the Upper East Region.

Madam Issah commended organizers for their continued effort to address the challenge in the region.

Executive Director of Save a Life Foundation, Ibrahim Sadik, says the exercise has become an annual event since its inception six years ago.

“We realized that at the Bolga Hospital, accident victims, pregnant mothers and children below 5 years were always going through so many problems when it came to getting blood transfusion, so for the past six years, we have committed a lot of time and resources to organize such exercises,” he stressed.

MTN’s Territory Sales Controller for Upper East Region, Richard Asamane, said in line with its dream of enriching the lives of Ghanaians, the company decided as part of its corporate social responsibility, to sponsor blood donation exercises across the country.

He also hailed the partnership with Save a Life Foundation.

Police seek AG advice in NPP Invincible Forces case

File photo
Police BadgeThe Accra Regional Police Command says it has written to the Attorney General Department for direction on how to proceed with a case involving two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Accra Regional Police Commander, COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare told Joy News in an interview that the possible complainant of the case has refused to cooperate with them.

In December last year, the police arrested two members of the party’s private security referred to as Invincible Forces, after a clash between them and some other group that invaded the NPP headquarters.

They allegedly chased out journalists, some party supporters and destroyed properties at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.

The windscreen of a car parked outside the party building was smashed.

COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare said the individuals involved in the violent act have been processed and “relevant statements have been taken from them.”

But according to him, all efforts of the police to get the person who was attacked and whose properties were destroyed have proven futile.

“The several occasions that we’ve gone looking for him, begging him virtually to come and support us to do this case has failed,” he indicated.

“What we have done as a result of that is to send the case docket as we have it without the cooperation of the possible complainant to the Attorney General’s office for advice so we are waiting for that advice and see the way forward,” Dr Dampare added.

The Commander stated however that the police will continue to treat criminal cease as such “irrespective of where the act is coming from.”

'JB's investigations not a football commentary' - Police

Supt Cephas Arthur Supt. Cephas Arthur
Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Supt. Cephas Arthur has said the police administration cannot run the ongoing investigation in connection with the murder of the late Abuakwa North MP, Hon. Joseph Boakye Dankwa, like a football commentary.

He cautioned Ghanaians, most especially the media, to desist from engaging in lies or statements that may ''jeopardize'' ongoing investigations.

Supt. Cephas Arthur in an interview with Nyankontton Mu Nsem noted, the police are aware of the level of interest in connection with the murder and how Ghanaians are eager to know the circumstances and culprits involved.

But that should not allow them to engage in lies or make statements that border on criminality because we will deal with anyone whose statement is found to be criminal, he warned.

Supt. Cephas Arthur said the police should be allowed to do their work. He said, we will inform Ghanaians when necessary because we cannot run the investigations like we are running football commentary on radio or on television.

He also cautioned the media to be circumspect in their report and avoid sensationalism. He said, although the media has the right to broadcast, that do not warrant them to publish false stories.

Supt. Cephas Arthur stressed on the need for the media to cross check their facts before publishing stories on this matter, else they crack the whip on any media firm whose publication is found to be criminal.

The late Joseph Boakye Danquah was stabbed to death at his Shiashie residence here in Accra on Tuesday 10 February 2016. He was found in a pool of blood when police rushed to the scene upon receiving a distress call.

Preliminary investigations revealed the late MP suffered multiple stab wounds which led to his death. Six suspects were arrested same day, but five were granted bail on Wednesday, 10 February 2016 with the security guard left under police custody until he was also granted police enquiry bail but will still be assisting with investigations. One other suspect who was arrested at Agogbloshie on Thursday, 11 February 2016, who allegedly confessed stabbing the late MP with two others, is still undergoing interrogation and in BNI custody.

Police grab NDC activist over murder plot

File photo
Handcuffs 1The Upper East Regional Police Command is interrogating an activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for an alleged plot to have the party’s parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, assassinated.

The suspect is said to be one of the campaign coordinators engaged by the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central, Emmanuel Akolbire Opam-Brown, for his unsuccessful bid for a third term in office at the last primaries of the NDC.

Police are withholding the identity of the suspect for security reasons. But reports gathered by Starr News indicate that the suspect was arrested after a middle-age man (name withheld for security reasons) had filed a complaint of assault against him. The complainant also disclosed to the police that the suspect had contracted him to assassinate the parliamentary candidate and promised to reward him with Gh¢ 20,000 and a car if he succeeded.

The Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Simon Afeku told Starr News police would not downplay the implications of the allegation.

“The fact that the complaint has been made does not make it true. It needs some further investigations, which we are carrying out. We are not downplaying the allegation. We just have to be firm and investigate it very thoroughly and come out with the truth and deal firmly with it. That is precisely what we are doing,” DCOP Afeku said.

Speaking to Starr News, the Bolgatanga Central Constituency Secretary of the party, Abdallah Salifu, described the complainant as a “creative liar” who is fond of duping and blackmailing public figures for a living. The complainant, according to Mr. Salifu, had duped former Ghana’s Ambassador to Mali, Donald Adabere, when he was the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister. He is also reported to have duped a former parliamentary aspirant, Simon Atebiya, and caused the arrest of one Boston on accusation that the suspect was involved in the printing of counterfeit currencies? which, according to Mr. Salifu, was later proven to be false.

“This is a gentleman that everybody must be careful of. He has a long history of criminal activities. This is not going to be the end of the story. In fact, he must prove beyond reasonable doubt because what he alleged can cause a serious internal problem. Already, after the primaries, you know what goes after the primaries? there are always petty, petty divisions. National executives came and we are beginning to mend our cracks. So, some of us are really surprised that stories like this are coming out from not even credible human beings,” the Constituency Secretary fumed.

When contacted for his take on the development, Mr. Adongo, who is the supposed target of the alleged assassination conspiracy, refrained from speaking much about the case. His posture, according to him, was due to the fact that the matter was being investigated by the police and also for fear that speaking to the issue could undercut the efforts being made by the party’s national hierarchy to ‘heal the wounds’ and ‘sandpaper the scars’ sustained by individuals and groups from the last parliamentary primaries.

The sitting MP, according to the Constituency Secretary, has expressed shock at the development. Mr. Salifu quoted Mr. Opam-Brown, whose name the complainant reportedly mentioned as the ultimate beneficiary of the alleged plot, to have said: “I have nothing against anybody. That is the last thing I would do. I didn’t touch anybody before I became an MP. And I will not touch anybody to get power.”

The allegation of the assassination plot comes as Ghanaians are still reeling from the wave of shock that greeted the cold-blooded murder of the MP for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a week ago and another assassination attempt on the NPP parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast North, Barbara Asher Ayisi, at the weekend.

Division after primaries
Isaac Adongo, a financial consultant, won the primary last November with four thousand, two hundred and ninety (4,290) votes. Renowned lawyer, Abraham Amaliba, finished behind Mr. Adongo with three thousand and fifty-two (3,052) votes. Computer expert and Incumbent MP, Emmanuel Akolbire Opam-Brown, polled two thousand, nine hundred and fifty-six (2,956) votes in third position. George Gamson, a senior revenue officer, finished at the bottom with nine hundred and six (906) votes.

Camps of Lawyer Amaliba and the sitting MP were at war with members of Mr. Adongo’s support base in the aftermath of the primary. They cited some physical attacks and verbal abuses they claimed were ceaselessly meted out to them by Mr. Adongo’s supporters and vowed to vote against the candidate at the general elections.

But Mr. Adongo, in defence, told Tanga Radio, a popular private radio station in Bolgatanga, that the allegations were unfounded.

“It is normally an initial reaction when people feel that election did not go their way. Yes, people are dissatisfied; people are complaining that their candidates did not win. But it is up to me now to rally them around to understand that we need to have the NDC in government because it is better to have the NDC in government and to support each other than to be divided and lose the election in 2016. I will do all I can to mobilise all the forces that are available to ensure that the NDC forms a united, formidable force to push the elephant once again into the bush,” he affirmed.

Patching the differences
Meanwhile, a group dubbed “Lawyer Amaliba Fan Club” has emerged in the constituency. Lawyer Amaliba told Tanga Radio the group was established essentially to ensure that the disgruntled members of his camp did not vote against Mr. Adongo as threatened.

Besides, a reconciliation committee, led by the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Alhaji Collins Dauda, assembled all aggrieved parties together in Bolgatanga from across the region’s fifteen constituencies to resolve the allegations of infractions levelled against some factions. The meeting took place on Wednesday 10th February, this year.

Three sitting MPs in the region crashed to the ground in defeat at the November 2015 primaries. They include Bolgatanga Central’s Emmanuel Akolbire Opam-Brown, Noah Ben Azure at Binduri and veteran legislator, Dominic Azimbe Azumah, at Garu. Albert Akoka, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Garu-Tempane, was the only government appointee among the three DCEs who vied for the parliamentary tickets in their respective constituencies in the region who succeeded, toppling the long-sitting MP for Garu.

The Chiana-Paga Constituency is yet to hold its primary for unexplained reasons only trailed by public speculations that largely link the delay to a petition filed by one of the aspirants over attempts to disqualify him from the race. But credible sources who took part in the reconciliation meeting say the primary would be held anytime soon to afford the eventual candidate the needed ample time to campaign ahead of the November 7 polls.

The battle ahead
Mr. Adongo is in an electoral showdown with two main contenders? Mr. Rex Asanga, a rural development expert into NGO management, from the NPP and Thomas Akurugu, a chartered accountant, from the People’s National Convention (PNC).

The NDC at the 2012 parliamentary polls obtained twenty-eight thousand, one hundred and forty-four (28,144) votes, representing 59.12%. The NPP garnered thirteen thousand, four hundred and sixty-four (13,464) votes, signifying 28.28%. The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) got three thousand, five hundred and twenty-three (3,523) votes or 7.40% as against the PNC’s two thousand, two hundred and sixty (2,260) votes or 4.75%. The National Democratic Party (NDP) attracted two hundred and sixteen (216) votes, representing 0.45%.

Aflao Border 1Residents at border communities have been asked to improve their co-operation with security officials in a bid to stem infiltration of possible terrorists into the country.

The Ghana Immigration Service is set to enforce a law that requires information on foreigners using hotels and other entities.

Head of Public Affairs at the Immigration Service, Francis Palmdeti, said the enforcement of the law is aimed at safeguarding the country from any possible terrorist attack.

He said the Immigration Service’s collaboration with the residents is crucial for leads that could held the service apprehend potential terrorists.

“That kind of collaboration is the way forward. We cannot pretend to have all the knowledge or the expertise to deal with issues like terrorism. It will require the collaboration of all security services and border residents.

“Terrorism has no boundaries. We think with the happenings within our subregion we need to step up our security to a notch higher and that will require the coorperation the key stakeholders who have a role to play,” he said.

Dominic Nitiwul Minority LeaderDeputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul
Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul says the arrest of the suspected killer of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North, JB Danquah-Adu, has given Members of the August House some relief.

“It gives us some bit of relief to hear that somebody has been arrested and that the police believe that they have caught someone that they were looking for. And for us, we are waiting to see the development as they come day-by-day, hour by hour”, he said.

Nitiwul, who is also the MP for Bimbilla, made this observation, Thursday, in an interview with Kasapafmonline.com moments after the arrest of the alleged 20-year old murderer.

He said the Minority will not be complacent with the arrest but rather will continue to partner with the Police to get to the bottom of the matter.

J.B Danquah-Adu was stabbed to death at his East Legon residence during the wee hours of Tuesday.

The police said they suspected foul play and launched forensic investigations into the case.

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, who was also not enthused with the development, urged the Police to ensure justice for the family of the deceased.

According to Nitiwul, when one does a thorough analysis of the circumstances under which the former Abuakwa North legislator lost his life, it was obvious that “nobody with a human feeling will do such a thing”.

Lionel Messi scored the 500th goal of his career Wednesday, in Barcelona’s 7-0 trouncing of Valencia in Copa del Rey action. Fittingly, the momentous tally came in scintillating, Messi-like fashion.
The Argentinean icon collected a fine back-heel pass from Luis Suarez in the penalty area, then left two defenders on the turf as he dribbled around them before slotting the ball into the right side of the net. The goal showed off Messi’s remarkable ability to keep the ball seemingly glued to his feet as he weaves through traffic, one of the main reasons that he has become an all-time great.
