Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has ordered investigations into
the structural viability of the North Industrial area branch of Melcom.The mayor visited the shopping centre following a Joy News report about cracks in the building.
In an interview with Joy News after the inspection, the mayor said the outcome of the investigation would determine his next line of action.
He said if after close of inspection they realise the place is not safe they will not hesitate to close the place down in the interest of public safety.
A Melcom building at Achimota in Accra collapsed in November 2012, killing scores of workers and customers and injuring several others.
The Metropolitan Assembly is therefore taking precautionary measures to ensure there is no repeat of the disaster.
But Managers of the shopping center however dispute the report of cracks in their North Industrial Area branch.
They explain that the perceived cracks are expansion joints.
